Puzzle Cup is a small app for people playing in one weekend hockey tournament. It is built to need as little about you as possible, and this policy describes exactly what it does and does not collect.
The short version. There are no accounts, no passwords, and no email addresses. We never ask for your real name. The app uses your camera or photo library only at the moment you choose to send a photo to your team, and never in the background. Your location, if you turn it on, is used on your phone to show distances and is never stored or shared. There is no analytics or tracking software of any kind, and nothing is sold or shared with advertisers.
The app has no login screen. When you enter a tournament join code, the app creates an anonymous account for you automatically, using a randomly generated internal identifier that is not a real email address and cannot receive mail. The credential is stored only on your own device — in the iOS Keychain on iPhone, or in browser storage on the web — so that the app remembers you between visits. We never ask for, and never receive, a real email address, phone number, or password of yours.
Everything the app stores about you is something you typed or chose in the app:
Your location never leaves your phone. If you tap "Show my distance" on the map, the app asks the operating system for your position once, and uses it purely to calculate how far you are from the rink and from your squad's pins. That calculation happens on your device. The coordinates are held in memory while the screen is open, are not saved to our database, are not sent to us or anyone else, and are gone when you close the app. We cannot see where you are, and neither can your teammates.
The app never asks for your location in the background, and it works fine if you refuse the permission — you simply do not see the distance readout, and the map does not show your position on it.
A map pin is a place you chose, not a place you were. You drop one by pressing and holding a spot on the map, and you can drag your own pins somewhere else afterwards; what gets saved is that point, a short label and an emoji. It is never your device's position, even when you have asked the app to show you where you are — those are two separate things, and only the one you picked by hand is stored or shared with your team. Tapping "Get Directions" hands off to Apple Maps or Google Maps; from that point you are in their app, under their privacy policy, not ours.
You can send a photo to your team's chat, either by taking one or by choosing an existing one. The app asks your permission the first time, and only opens the camera or photo library at the moment you tap the camera button — it has no access at any other time, and never scans or reads your library in the background.
A photo you send is uploaded to our storage and shown to your team in the chat. Please note that photos in chat are shared with your team, so treat them the way you would a photo sent to a group text. If you want a photo removed, you or a team captain can delete the message, you can report it in the app, or you can contact us using the address below.
Press and hold any chat message to report it or to block the person who sent it. Reports are visible to your team captain and to the tournament admins, and record who reported what, the reason given, and a copy of the reported message — kept so that a moderator can still see what was reported after the message itself is deleted. Blocking is private: the other person is not told, and blocks are stored only as a pair of account identifiers.
Chat also runs an automatic word filter on messages and display names before they are sent. The filtering happens on your device: swearing is bleeped out before the message leaves your phone, so what reaches our database is the bleeped version, and a message the filter refuses outright is never stored at all. If you choose to leave a tip, the payment is handled entirely by Apple's In-App Purchase system and processed by RevenueCat. We never see your card details. We receive only confirmation that a purchase happened. Donations to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism are made on the foundation's own website, which we link to but do not operate, and any information you give them is governed by their privacy policy.
Your display name, avatar, chat messages, bring-list entries, and map pins are visible to other people in your tournament, and generally to your own team. Please treat the chat as you would a group text with your team: do not post anything you would not want teammates to read. Team captains and tournament organizers can remove messages and manage their roster.
The app relies on a small number of service providers:
We do not sell your information, we do not share it with advertisers, and there is no advertising, analytics, or third-party tracking in the app.
You can sign out at any time from the Team tab, and you can delete your account outright from the same place — Team → Delete Account. Deleting is immediate and permanent, and it takes with it your profile, your chat messages and photos, your map pins, and the bring-list items you added. Items somebody else added but you had claimed are released back to your team rather than deleted, since they belong to whoever added them.
You do not need to ask us, and you do not need to explain why. If something goes wrong, or you would rather we did it for you, email the address below. Tournament data is not intended to be kept long-term in any case: it exists to run one weekend event, and map pins expire automatically a few hours after being dropped.
The app is intended for adults playing in, or attending, the tournament. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, contact us and we will delete it.
